The Ten Most Important Things We've Done In Our Business: #1 Apply The Compound Effect
I’m starting a new blog post series today. We’ve been fortunate in our Scentsy business to grow substantially over the last several months, and expand into various international markets.
I want to give away everything that has allowed us to take a business (which some people consider to be a hobby), and grow it into a major enterprise, where we earn an income comparable to top professionals.
So I am going to share the “The Ten Most Important Things We’ve Done In Our Business”, starting with #1: Applying The Compound Effect.
What is the Compound Effect?
My first formal introduction to this principle was when I read the book (of the same title) by Darren Hardy, editor of Success magazine. I was familiar in practice with this principle, but reading the book 4 years ago, sunk home its importance. Since the day both Meghann and I read the book, we have instituted its principles daily into our business. Here is the essence of “The Compound Effect”
Success is merely the daily execution of small actions, that when built into a routine, and consistently repeated, yield compounding results over a long period of time
That was, and continues to be, the most important discovery that we’ve made in our business. It is principle number one for a reason. It is absolutely why we’ve been able to grow our business the way that we have. Consistency, habit and routine have been far more important than anything else to our success. Success doesn’t come overnight. Rather, it cumulates as the product of many, many compounding actions consistently applied over time.
We’ve unfortunately seen this scenario play out far too often over the past several years:
- A new person joins our organization. They love the product and are excited about the chance to grow a business from home.
- They jump into the business with both feet. They spend a lot of time in the first two months learning about the business and products, and marketing themselves. They quickly hold a party, or do a show. They get some good results, make some sales, and maybe even get a recruit or two.
- They’ve got momentum, and that momentum carries them forward for a few months. Then after all their friends and family, who are interested, have purchased products from them, their sales start to taper off.
- They continue to take action but not with the same intensity, and definitely not with the same time commitment as their first several months. Where they used to put in 20 hours in a week, they are now doing ten. Ten turns to seven. Seven turns to five. Then a week off. Then a couple hours here and there. Then a couple weeks off. Then a couple Facebook posts. You get the point.
- By this time their sales have fallen off completely. Their team isn’t growing. They are left scratching their heads wondering what is wrong. That is when self doubt creeps in. They question their ability to be successful in the business.
- Then they have a decision to make: they can either basically start over again and try and get the momentum back, or they can quit. I’m happy to say that quite a few people chose the former. Unfortunately a good number also choose the latter.
You see, the problem was never them. The problem was never the product or the opportunity. The whole time their sales were falling off, someone else’s sales were holding steady, perhaps even increasing.
The problem was in their method. Success in direct sales is a marathon, not a sprint.
There is a much better method to take. It is the consistent application of action method. It is the compound effect. It is the method that we have engaged for years, and it is the method that is at the heart of any success we’ve had.
We know that in a successful business there are a number of “actions” that must be taken. Failure to perform these actions on a consistent basis will ultimately lead to critical failure of the business. Here is a snapshot of a few of the important actions that must take place consistently in our business (each business will have its own set of unique actions):
- Lead generation for sales (new customers);
- Lead generation for recruits (team growth);
- Organic sales efforts (parties, fairs, shows, etc);
- Online marketing efforts;
- Social media marketing and website maintenance;
- Customer service for prior customers (organic);
- Customer service and engagement for online customers;
- New recruit training;
- Team training and downline promotion (in person);
- Team training online
- Building a community of support within our team;
- New market and international expansion efforts;
- Leadership development;
- Working with existing leaders in organization;
- Continually educating ourselves on our products and markets
I could go on. There are many actions that are needed to run a successful business. The secret however is that you can’t do them all in a sprint. A better approach is to break down each action into various sub-actions and then schedule the sub actions into your schedule so that they get done. Working 4 hours a day, every day, for a year, beats all night weekenders every month hands down. This is the essence of the compound effect. You figure out what the 50 or so actions in your business are that are necessary to be successful. Then you plan them into your schedule. Then you commit to that schedule and then stick with it long enough to see results. Over time the results come.
Consistency, routine, habit. All the “boring” stuff is BY FAR the most important stuff for your business. It is what has made the difference for us. We know that every single working day there are going to be 10-15 routine things that we must do. So we do them and then detach from the immediate results. We trust the system. We know that by performing consistent effective actions, over a long period of time, that results will follow. We don’t get worked up if we have one bad party or someone rejects us. We know that the system won’t fail us, and because we are doing more of the same actions next week we’ll get another chance.
No matter what business you are in I know that this concept can help you. It has done absolute wonders for us. Try it! Make a list of the 50 most important actions that you can take in your business, then build your schedule so that these get performed at least once a month. Then stick with the business for at least a year. I can promise that you will get results. Don’t be like the many people who fail. The people who “sprint” a couple months and then become inconsistent. The people who succeed are the ones who understand and apply the compound effect. They are the ones who know that little actions, consistently carried out in a routine fashion over time, yield compounding results.

Build Your Business Into A Beautiful System
Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing. (Thomas A. Edison)
Do you have systems in place for your business? Don’t for a second think that systems are only for large corporations with large budgets. They are critical for small business and start-ups. They are essential for people who are wanting to be successful in a home based business.
A system is something that you, and your clients can rely on. It builds efficiency into your actions. It prevents the inefficient “spinning of your wheels” that so many small business owners experience while trying to get the business off the ground.
Here is a simple system that you can put into place in your business right now. It is the “Action Grid”.
1. Take out a Calendar for September 2013
2. Take a separate piece of paper and list 30 effective actions that you should do to grow your business
3. Now, input all 30 actions onto the September calendar.
As simple as it sounds. You now have a system that you can rely on for September. You just have to put that Calendar up on the wall and each day you look at the actions that you are supposed to do for that day, and then you do them.
This is just a simple idea. There are many, many others that will make your business more effective and more efficient. Systems don’t need to be complicated. If they are complicated then you won’t do them, and then you kill the whole concept of the system.
Build the system, watch the results.

The Benefits of Imagining "What Could Be"
There is far more to using your mind to imagine new possibilities than just the actual realization of those possibilities.
I believe very much that we live in a “material comparison” culture. It is sad. Many people are so driven in life to “achieve” but for what? To get more “stuff”? To have people “think they’re important? What a waste.
Every time that I hear someone say “money is the scorecard” I feel sincerely that they have missed the whole point of life
What about creating just for the sake of creating?
What about making something great because of the value that it will give to others, independent of what it will give to you?
What about getting an education, not because you want a job, but simply because you want to learn?
What about doing a great job in your “job”, not because it will get you a promotion, but simply because it feels good to do a good job?
I believe that many people are not motivated by the “intrinsic” value of the actions they perform
This is unfortunate. There is far more to setting big goals, and imagining and visualizing new possibilities than just the “acquisition”.
Here are some additional (and I would argue much more important benefits):
- People who utilize their imagination on a routine basis are more creative than those who don’t;
- When you imagine “what could be” you become internally motivated. This frees you from the chains of our societal reward system (of carrots and sticks). You don’t need someone or something to trigger your motivation; and
- You are happy. Thinking about exciting possibilities makes me happy. If I ever need a “natural” boost to my psyche I just let my imagination do it. I think about something that would be fun or cool if it happened and then I make a plan. Then I take action on that plan. This process, for me, has a 100% return ratio on my positive emotional state. It never fails. I’m always in good spirits when I engage this “creative implementation” exercise.

5 Ways To Develop Mental Toughness In Your Business
You have to be mentally tough if you are going to survive as an entrepreneur. No matter what business you are in, you will deal with set-backs, rejection, failure, and disappointment from time to time. It happens to anyone who is brave enough to venture out on their own and attempt to create something great.
Mental toughness is just like courage. You don’t get it by reading a book or hearing about someone who displayed it. You only get it by DOING the things that require it.
Here are some tips to help you develop mental toughness in your business:
1. Each day set a HARD GOAL for that specific day. By hard goal I mean something that is really challenging. Don’t avoid challenges, rather intentionally seek them out every single day. Don’t get caught up in the results of the specific challenge or goal. If you don’t achieve the day’s hard goal, who cares. You went after it, and it was hard. That is a victory. If you do this each day, over time you will get mentally tough.
2. Learn to go a little further. This one is easy to apply in the context of exercise. If you are running on the treadmill and you set a goal for 1 hour at a certain speed. When the hour is done you should ALWAYS push out an extra 5 minutes. You should always do more when you think you have reached your limit. Do the same thing in your business. After you are exhausted at the end of the day, push out another 5 calls. Before you go to bed, instead of watching the stupid TV, sit down at your computer and fire out 1 more email to someone who can help you in building your business. If you do this each day, over time you will get mentally tough.
3. When you have a setback (which is inevitable), find a way to make it into a positive learning experience: Simple habit – each time you experience a setback ask yourself what you learned, and how you can apply this in the future. This way you won’t get discouraged if you experience setbacks.
4. If you aren’t being pushed to the max, then your primary goals are too easy, look bigger: You become mentally tough by setting big goals. Big daily goals (point 1) and big primary goals (monthly, annual, lifetime, etc). If you aren’t being pushed to the max, then you should change your goals. You’ve set them too small. If you aren’t having to give absolutely everything you got to achieve them, then your goals are too small, and you won’t develop mental toughness.
5. Confront the “Brutal Facts”: Each goal has “brutal facts” associated with it. That is, if you are going to achieve the goal there are some tough things that you are going to have to do. You develop mental toughness by learning to “confront” these facts right off the bat. Instead of ignoring the facts, being ignorant to them, or complaining when they present themselves, just confront them. This principle applies to all aspects of life – any pursuit. Any worthwhile pursuit has associated pain. Confront the pain right off the bat. Tell yourself “I know I have to walk through this, but I’m ok with that”. That will make you mentally tough.

In A Home Based Business Consistency Is The Key
I have a belief that all human greatness is founded upon routine, that truly great human behaviour is impossible without this central part of your life being set up and governed by routine. All greatness comes out of an investment in time and the perfection of skills that render you great. And so, show me almost any truly great person in the world who exhibits some kind of extraordinary skills, and I’ll show you a person whose life is governed largely by routine (John Danaher).
You NEED consistency in your home based business. Let me repeat yourself – you NEED consistency.
If you don’t have it, then your business will not last long term. Running your business in bursts will not give you great results over time. There is power in consistency, systems and routines.
Here is a simple trick to build more consistency in your business. I call it the “grid technique”.
Take a piece of paper. At the top of the paper write each day of the week. Each day will form a vertical column. Then on a separate piece of paper make a list of all the “things” (systems, habits, routines, acts) that you need to consistently do in your business. Then simply take the list and insert each act into one of the columns. Once you are done, you have a weekly plan for your business.
You can adapt the plan over time, but the key is that you are intentional, you are direct, you are consistent.
Don’t leave your success to chance. Be deliberate. Be consistent.

IF YOU DO A HOME BASED BUSINESS – TREAT IT LIKE A REAL JOB, SHOW UP FOR WORK EVERY DAY
It bugs me how many people market their home based businesses on the internet:
You usually see imagery of a beach, with a guy (or couple) who tell you about their amazing life of freedom and then give some “law of attraction”, mindset, type pitch about how their life was changed in a very short time (often in less than a year). You know the ads. I see them every day on my facebook feed. Since I’m a home based business professional, Facebook targets me in their algorithms. If you do a home based business you likely see them as well.
Here is the thing….
It is possible that the guy with the pony-tail is telling the truth. It is POSSIBLE that he really did go from making $10,000 a year and barely able to pay his rent, to driving that Ferrari (that isn’t leased). It is POSSIBLE that the law of attraction really did work in his favour, and the moment that he decided that we wanted something in his life that the universe conspired to give it to him. It is POSSIBLE….
But It Isn’t Very Likely
It is much more likely that he is trying to deceive you to sign up in his downline, and it is also very likely that you are deceiving yourself. It is very very real, that you can build a profitable home based business. Meg and I have done it with Scentsy. We’ve attained the highest rank in the company, and the business supports our family full time.
If you’re wanting to have a home based business that makes really good money you’ll have to work hard, and long, just like you’ll have to work hard and long in any non-home based business to make it successful.
You’re going to have to do the work. You’re going to have to show up every single day.
Here is some advice for you. Take it from someone who knows from experience. If you want to have a professional home based business, then you need to act like a professional. This is what a professional does:
- A professional works, every single day, except for the days that they have pre-planned as vacation;
- A professional is committed over the long haul;
- A professional is patient and seeks order and consistency in what they do;
- A professional acts in the face of fear;
- A professional makes no excuses;
- A professional is prepared;
- A professional dedicates himself to mastering their product and technique; and
- A professional endures adversity and does not take failure personally.
Don’t trick yourself. That guy or girl or couple you see on the “law of attraction” type advertisement, they probably don’t exist. But you can have a great home based business if you’ll just put in the work.
